Arizona National Scenic Trail Thru-Hiker Update fo Arizona National Scenic Trail Thru-Hiker Update for Autumn 2025 ~ (this is an abbreviated update - complete update available at the link in our bio) This update is intended as a planning guide for anyone considering a thru-hike or ride on the AZT this autumn season. • Hwy 89A is open. This gets you access to the Orderville Trailhead and the town of Jacob Lake. • Hwy 67 is open from Jacob Lake to the North Rim Country Store and Kaibab Lodge, but remains closed south of there. Affected passages from north to south: • Passage 43 (Buckskin Mountain) Stateline Campground to Winter Road Open! • Passage 42 (Kaibab Plateau North) Winter Road to Orderville Trailhead Open! You will see impacts from the Mangum Fire (2020) and White Sage fire (2025). Please be cautious when traveling through burned zones, especially standing dead trees that can fall at any time. • Passage 41 (Kaibab Plateau Central) Orderville Trailhead to Telephone Hill Trailhead CLOSED A reroute may be coming within the next few weeks, but we can’t promise anything yet. • Passage 40 (Kaibab Plateau South) Telephone Hill Trailhead to Forest/Park Boundary CLOSED A reroute may be coming within the next few weeks, but we can’t promise anything yet. • Passage 39 (Grand Canyon North Rim) Forest/Park Boundary to North Kaibab Trailhead CLOSED This will likely remain closed for the next year. • Passage 38 (Grand Canyon Inner Gorge) North Kaibab Trailhead to South Kaibab Trailhead CLOSED, except for 4 miles from South Kaibab Trailhead to The Tipoff A portion of this passage may open later this year, connecting the South Kaibab Trailhead to Bright Angel Campground and Phantom Ranch. But the 14 miles from the Ranch to the North Kaibab Trailhead will likely remain closed for a year or longer depending on the extent of the post-fire erosion, flooding, and damage to the trail, bridges, water line, and other infrastructure.
The ATA has been working in collaboration with the The ATA has been working in collaboration with the @arizonapubliclands and Kaibab National Forest to reopen segments of the #arizonatrail closed within the #WhiteSageFire along Passages 42 and 43 in northern Arizona. Last week, we sent a crew from @flagline_trails LLC to install trail signs to assist with navigation and reestablish tread that had been burned and obscured by ash and dust. While it isn't the scenic wander through ponderosa pine forest that it used to be, the trail is open from Stateline Campground at the Arizona/Utah border to Orderville Trailhead at Highway 89A. Anyone hiking or riding the trail along these 27.7 miles should be aware of hazards associated with traveling within a burn zone.

@u.s.forestservice staff recently conducted an ass @u.s.forestservice staff recently conducted an assessment of the #ArizonaTrail affected by the White Sage and Dragon Bravo fires. Some segments were high severity burns, like the area near East Rim View, while other areas are less severe and will recover more quickly. We are working closely with the Forest Service to determine what it will take to reopen the #AZT on the Kaibab Plateau, and what detour options exist on Forest Roads nearby as a temporary route. The most significant damage to the trail and forest appear to be within Grand Canyon National Park and AZT Passage 39 (Grand Canyon - North Rim). These 12 miles remain closed and will likely be off-limits through 2025. There are significant impacts to the North Kaibab Trail from the North Kaibab Trailhead to Supai Tunnel (1.8 miles). Due to the sensitive soils, numerous rock structures, and highly erosive nature of the trail in this part of Grand Canyon, post-fire flooding from summer rains is likely to obliterate the trail we once knew and loved. It could be a long time before an Arizona Trail thru-hike or rim-to-rim adventure is possible. HWY 67 between Jacob Lake and the North Rim remains closed to the public, as well as all trails, roads, and campgrounds on the North Rim. Grand Canyon National Park anticipates the North Rim’s trails, roads and all services to remained closed through 2025, and more likely until summer of 2026. For now, the AZT is closed between Orderville Trailhead at Hwy 89A and The Tipoff -- a scenic overlook 4 miles into Grand Canyon, accessible from the South Kaibab Trailhead. Information on closures, reroutes and detours can always be found on our website, and on the Arizona Trail app available through @faroutguides. Since July 4, the #DragonBravoFire has consumed 145,504 acres and is currently 63% contained. Our most sincere gratitude goes out to the thousands of firefighters who have worked under extreme conditions to help protect the natural, cultural and recreational resources on the North Rim.
Join Us at the Summit on October 24 & 25 For four Join Us at the Summit on October 24 & 25 For four years, the Network for Arizona Trails has been creating essential space for the trail community in Arizona to come together to advance our collective goals and initiatives. The #SummitforArizonaTrails returns to Cottonwood on October 24 and 25 for two days of roundtable discussions, presentations, networking opportunities, and much more. The Summit connects organizations, agencies and peers with similar goals to share resources and knowledge; provides space for advocacy around access, funding and policy on the local, regional, state and national level; and works to advance specific topics and initiatives that benefit and educate trail users and communities alike. The inaugural Summit in 2020 was attended by over 100 members of the trails community. 2024 once again saw over 100 participants gathered to "talk trail" and elevate trail-related recreation in Arizona.
