This year’s commemorative mug features a scene from an unnamed canyon on the Tonto National Forest within a unique landscape that marks the transition zone from Upper Sonoran Desert to chaparral, where interesting plants and animals flourish. If you’re here after the monsoon season you will see bright white flowers blooming from the sacred datura (Datura wrightii), also called moon lily or jimsonweed. The sweet fragrance of these flowers – which only bloom for one or two nights before they shrivel and fade – make nocturnal outings on the Arizona Trail a special experience. When you spend a few minutes admiring these flowers you’re likely to share the space with sphinx moths (Manduca sexta). These giant insects are as large as hummingbirds, and drink sweet nectar from deep within the flowers. The mug‘s glaze is inspired by the beauty and mystery of nighttime on the trail. May it inspire you to explore all of the Arizona Trail’s passages – illuminated by the sun, moon and stars – with the knowledge you are helping to protect, maintain and improve this treasured 800-mile resource.
