Stretching from the border with Mexico northward to Utah, the Arizona Trail is considered one of the country’s premier long-distance trails. From start to finish, groups of committed volunteers have been working behind the scenes in building, designing and maintaining the trail as it makes its 817 mile border-to-border trek. Sierra Vista resident Bernie Stalmann is one of those volunteers. He has spent countless hours swinging a pick on the Arizona Trail, earning a well-deserved designation as “trail dog.”
