Sierra Vista started out in 1877 as Camp Huachuca, established to protect settlers from Chiricahua Apaches. It is the gateway to the southern terminus of the Arizona Trail and has all services, but the town is spread out.

This National Memorial at the Arizona Trail’s southern terminus commemorates the Francisco Vásquez de Coronado Expedition of 1540-1542. Over 300 Spanish soldiers, several hundred Mexican-Indian allies, and 1,500 stock animals accompanied Coronado on his search for the Seven Cities of Gold.
  • San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area (1763 Paseo San Luis), (520) 439-6400. Located six miles east of Sierra Vista, this natural wonder contains 40 miles of protected riparian area along the San Pedro River. It also provides invaluable habitat for 250 species of migrant and wintering birds, and contains archaeological sites representing human occupation from 13,000 years ago.

Ramsey Canyon, located in the Huachuca Mountains within the Upper San Pedro River Basin in southeastern Arizona, is renowned for its outstanding scenic beauty and the diversity of its plant and animal life, including 15 species of hummingbirds.
