Remote Rainwater Collector Installed Near Redington Pass
We are proud to announce the successful installation of the third remote rainwater collector along a particularly arid segment of the Arizona Trail, at Redington Pass on the Coronado National Forest. This steel structure contains a 1,500-gallon poly tank that fills with rain during the winter and will support hikers, mountain bikers and equestrians during the spring season. It will refill with summer monsoon storms for use during the autumn season. Once the tank is full, the excess flows into a trough that is available for wildlife.
Special thanks to the HDR Foundation for providing generous funding to make this project possible, and to an all-star crew of HDR volunteers from Tucson and Phoenix that assisted with assembly of the rainwater collector in December. We are also grateful for support from the Coronado National Forest staff for their assistance with project site selection, approvals, as well as materials storage and transportation. Huge thanks to Scott Lonergan for transporting the rainwater collector materials from Phoenix to Tucson and then up Redington Pass!
This project is one of many the ATA is undertaking to improve water resources along the entire AZT. We couldn’t do any of this without financial support from members, donors, business partners and friends. Learn more about Water Sources along the Arizona Trail here.
