Volunteers recently completed an impressive rock-a Volunteers recently completed an impressive rock-and-rail fence at our favorite AZT trailhead in Mogollon Rim Country: the Pine Trailhead. The old log fence, built in 2020, was not holding up to the elements, so the Payson Ranger District of Tonto National Forest, Pine-Strawberry Fuel Reduction, and the Arizona Trail Association partnered to replace it.

Working eight Thursdays in a row, volunteers removed the old fence, cleared brush, and built 44 rock gabions to hold 39 steel rails encircling the parking lot. This structure will help protect the Arizona National Scenic Trail (also the Highline National Recreation Trail) and forest resources from motorized impacts. Plus, it’s fireproof and will last for generations.

Our most sincere gratitude to everyone who helped make this project a success. We are honored to be able to support our partners at the U.S. Forest Service — especially during the government shutdown when their resources are compromised.

We got a surprise visit today from two Autumn 2025 We got a surprise visit today from two Autumn 2025 thru-hikers at the Arizona Trail Association office in Tucson. Traveling all the way from Germany, Negotiator and Speedy Gonzales just finished their adventure from the South Rim of Grand Canyon to the U.S./Mexico border. This duo has enjoyed the Pacific Crest and Continental Divide National Scenic Trails together, and were delighted to experience most of the AZT this season (25.5 miles of the trail remain closed due to the Dragon Bravo Fire). They were still glowing from time spent on the trail, and are now on their way to hike into Grand Canyon for a quick overnighter at Bright Angel Campground if they can score a walk-up permit.

We are grateful for the opportunity to protect, maintain and improve the Arizona Trail so friends like these can have the adventure of a lifetime within the deserts, mountains, canyons, forests and communities of Arizona.

Earlier this month our #TrailSkillsInstitute class Earlier this month our #TrailSkillsInstitute class learned how to shape rocks and build rock structures near #MormonLake. After some classroom time, Mark Loseth laid out a few options for the class to tackle. They decided to work on a ramp to reinforce a water bar, which would also improve trail user experience. The rest of the day was spent digging the hole & getting some corner rocks in place. On day two, the ramp slowly took shape. It looks great and made that little section of trail more fun for bikes, and a little easier on all kinds of feet!

We are excited to announce that new trail construc We are excited to announce that new trail construction is underway on the Santa Rita Foothills Singletrack reroute project within the Coronado National Forest!
@flagline_trails began mechanized trail construction on October 1 and the ATA will be working with Ancestral Lands crews and volunteers to finish the tread with hand tools, hand-building new trail, and obliterating old sections of trail.

The primary goal of this project is to remove the #AZT from dirt roads while improving trail sustainability and user experience. Once completed, this will add 10.7 miles of new singletrack to Passages 5 and 6, making both of these passages road-free!

We are grateful for funding from @azstateparks, @u.s.forestservice, @spiritworld100, South 32, and ATA members and donors to help make this project a success.

We are honored to be able to build trail in the foothills of the Santa Rita Mountains — a traditional cultural property known as Ce:wi Duag (Long Mountain) to the Tohono O’odham.
