The Arizona Trail Association is proud to announce The Arizona Trail Association is proud to announce the successful installation of the third remote rainwater collector along Passage 10 of the #ArizonaTrail at Redington Pass on the #CoronadoNationalForest.

This is a very important project for the ATA, our project partners, trail users and wildlife. Not only will this new water source provide reliable drinking water for trail users in this arid region. When the internal 1,500-gallon rainwater harvesting tank fills up, an overflow plumbing system feeds water outside into a wildlife drinking trough, providing vital support to wildlife.

This was a complex project that involved aligning many moving pieces and timelines. The ATA is fortunate and grateful to have support from a strong project team that made this project a success - special thanks goes out to:

- First and foremost: The @hdr_inc Foundation for providing generous funding to make this project possible and to an all-star crew of HDR volunteers from Tucson and Phoenix that assisted with assembly of the rainwater collector.

- Coronado National Forest and Santa Catalina Ranger District staff for assistance with project site selection, project approvals, materials storage and transportation, and heavy equipment operation.

- Arizona Trail Association members, donors, volunteers and staff for financial support, project planning, materials transportation and work on the ground assembling the rainwater collector.

- Creedbilt, Inc. for fabrication of the rainwater collector.

The rainwater collector was installed "dry" and is currently empty. The area will need to receive significant precipitation before trail users can rely on it for drinking water. Water from the spigot must be treated before drinking.

⚒️ Moving from Roads to Singletrack ~ by Neil Stitzer, Trail Director
After years of planning, the Arizona Trail Association is excited to be breaking ground with new trail construction in the #SantaRitaMountains (Passage 5). In our ongoing effort to remove the #ArizonaTrail from dirt roads, we started working on October 1 and crews have been out in the dirt ever since. The Santa Rita Foothills Singletrack Project will eliminate all road miles in the area, and instead treat trail users to fresh trail across this beautiful landscape of high desert and oak woodland. Trail projects like this are vital to preserve the non-motorized nature of the #AZT. So far we have built over 3 miles of new trail through a combination of professional trail crews and ATA volunteers. We anticipate finishing all 11 miles of trail construction in the Spring of 2026.

The ATA utilizes grant funding from the U.S Forest Service and Arizona State Parks & Trails for these projects, but relies on individual donations as required matches. As federal funding dwindles and without any state monies appropriated last year, the importance of individuals supporting our efforts has become increasingly important. Please donate today to ensure a better Arizona Trail for the future. https://aztrail.org/2025-end-of-year-fundraiser/

We are so excited with the wonderful progress bein We are so excited with the wonderful progress being made with new trail construction in the Santa Rita Mountains (Passage 5). In our ongoing effort to remove the Arizona Trail from dirt roads, we started working on October 1 and crews have been out in the dirt ever since. In what we're calling the Santa Rita Foothills Singletrack Project, this will eliminate almost all road miles in the area, and instead treat trail users to fresh trail across this beautiful landscape of high desert and oak woodland. As dirt roads on the Coronado National Forest have become increasingly popular for UTVs, trail projects like this are vital to preserve the non-motorized nature of the AZT.

Thanks to our friends at the Coronado National Forest who completed all the necessary environmental studies to approve trail construction, we have been able to build over 2.4 miles through a combination of professional trail crews from @Flagline Trails and @Arizona Conservation Corps. In addition, our Trail Skills Institute utilized hard-working volunteers to get quality work done on the ground. Youth from our @Seeds of Stewardship program and veterans from our @AZTVETS program will also participate in the effort.

Weather permitting, we hope to finish all 11 miles of trail construction by April of 2026. Want to get involved? Please sign up as a volunteer or donate to help us reach our goal. The Santa Rita Foothills Singletrack Project is just one of many we have in the queue to improve the AZT across the state. We are grateful for funding from Arizona State Parks & Trails, the U.S. Forest Service, and members, donors, business partners and friends like you!

We would also like to share our gratitude to the Tohono O'odham Nation for their support of this project throughout the planning phase over the past four years. The Santa Rita Mountains (Cewi Duag, or "Long Mountain" in the O'odham language) is an important cultural landscape, and we are honored for the opportunity to build trail here so that people can immerse themselves in this landscape and receive its blessings.
