_______________
Joan Meiners @joan_bikes_arizona is an environmental journalist, currently writing about climate issues across Arizona for The Arizona Republic , the state's largest newspaper. In fall 2025, she bikepacked the entire #ArizonaTrail from Utah to Mexico, mostly alone, and published stories about the climate impacts, research and solutions relevant to each region along the way. It was the experience of a lifetime and she could not have imagined it starting with a massive wildfire at the Grand Canyon and ending with landscape-destroying border wall construction -- talk about environmental issues as a sign of the times! She's now working on expanding that experience and reporting into a book for Island Press.

Before becoming a journalist, Joan completed a Ph.D. in Interdisciplinary Ecology with a focus on studying biodiversity patterns among native bees across different habitats. She still occasionally collaborates on science research projects and publications. Before that, she spent most of her 20s racing and crashing her road and mountain bikes all over the west, and she tries to ride more carefully now. Since redirecting her love for the environment to a primary focus on journalism in 2019, her writing has won numerous national grants and awards for investigative reporting and feature writing and has appeared in outlets including National Geographic, Discover Magazine, Orion Magazine, The Washington Post Magazine and more.
