We’ll meet at the Pine Trailhead in Pine and explore sections of the Highline / Arizona Trail, checking out nearby junctions and connector routes. Whether you want a casual walk, a longer adventure, or even a bike ride instead, this outing is flexible and open to all abilities.
After the hike, we’ll gather at @That Brewery (Arizona Trail Business Partner) for lunch and a well-earned Arizona Trail Ale.
Come celebrate trails, community, and the Arizona outdoors with us on National Trails Day!

⚒️ Last weekend, we held the first of two Trail St ⚒️ Last weekend, we held the first of two Trail Structures & Rock Work Trail Skills Institute (TSI) courses in #WalnutCanyon on Passage 31. Volunteers learned about rock work planning and execution and built a rock ramp to mitigate some badly eroded and steep trail along the #AZT. This structure should hold up for years to come, and all trail users will all benefit from this project!
As we head into Memorial Day weekend, I’ve been re As we head into Memorial Day weekend, I’ve been reflecting on why this work matters—not just the stewardship itself, but what these moments in wild places mean for the military community.

This weekend, a small crew of veterans are deep in the Rincon Mountains for Operation Manning Camp Relief, conducting trail work along the Arizona Trail in honor of those we’ve lost and those still carrying invisible wounds long after service.

For many veterans, Memorial Day isn’t a holiday. It’s sacred ground.

I’ve come to believe that mission therapy is real—not as a slogan, but as a lived experience. Shared hardship. Purpose. Camaraderie. Service. Time away from noise and distraction. Connection to the natural world. These things create space for healing in ways modern life often cannot.

Nature has become the perfect prescription.

Not because it erases pain, but because it reminds us we are still capable of movement, connection, growth, and continued service despite the weight we carry.

This work isn’t about “fixing” veterans. It’s about continuing the mission together.

Sometimes healing happens around a campfire.
Sometimes it happens with a trail tool in your hands.
Sometimes it happens on a steep climb beside someone who simply understands.

To everyone who supports the Arizona Trail Association and the @aztrailvets—thank you for helping make these experiences possible.

With gratitude,

Michael “Chappy” Chappell, ATA VETS Program Director
