Invasive Weeds of the Sonoran Desert

March 7, 2018 Sabrina Carlson

On March 7th, 2018 one hundred students from Mount Elden Middle School’s Apex program traveled south from Flagstaff to meet up with me at the Picketpost Trailhead on the Arizona Trail near Superior, Arizona. This long distance outing has become an annual tradition and a great way to introduce the students of Flagstaff to the ecosystem of the southern part […]

🌲The @aztassociation acknowledges the San Francisco peaks are culturally significant to the Acoma, Apache, Havasupai, Hopi, Hualapai, Navajo, Southern Paiute, Yavapai and Zuni. We are dedicated to the preservation of the AZT and the landscapes it traverses for the benefit of all people.

🙌We did it!! In two fall seasons, we completed 🙌We did it!! In two fall seasons, we completed a thorough brushing and re-tread of the Butterfly Trail on Mt. Lemmon, from the trailhead to Butterfly Peak!
The five volunteers who helped with the last bit were energetic, and finished most of the work before lunch. We ran into an ACE crew that was brushing the remaining summer growth off the trail. We briefly discussed whether to initiate a large rock work project to reinforce the tread in a particular area, but everyone was a bit spent after. The ATA or USFS will come back to do the rock work another time.
Thank you to all of the volunteers for the past 2 years that have made this trail safely hikable to get at the lower Butterfly Trail.

The @faroutguides Arizona Trail App is 30% OFF for The @faroutguides Arizona Trail App is 30% OFF for FarOut’s biggest sale of the year! Sale ends Monday, Nov 27 - 🔗in profile

Our friends at FarOut Guides have developed the most complete smartphone app for the #ArizonaTrail, which has become the go-to resource for day trippers and thru-hikers alike. There’s a northbound and southbound feature, and a complete route for mountain bikers to avoid designated wilderness areas. You’ll also find elevation profiles, services within gateway communities, road crossings, points of interest, and most importantly – where to find water.

With over two decades of water source research and documentation in our archives, we made water information available to #FarOut to include within the app. And thanks to the public comments feature, you can check water quality and reliability based on who visited there last. To add to this, FarOut recently added a feature called Water Status. They used thousands of water comments to train an AI model to predict whether the water source is (1) dry, or (2) low flow, or (3) good flow, or (4) the comment is not relevant to water flow. The water source is scored on a weekly basis and then published within the app. This way, the trail user can see at a glance what others are saying about a particular water source over the past two weeks without having to scroll through the comments.
