Snowshoes for Snow Science

January 30, 2019 Sabrina Carlson

On January 30, 2019, forty students from Flagstaff Junior Academy made a visit to the Arizona Nordic Village to experience the joy of learning outdoors in the winter.   If you think getting 40 5th graders dressed in snow clothes, boots, and snowshoes is easy, you’ve definitely never done it. Congratulations to former @aztgeargirls participan Congratulations to former @aztgeargirls participant, Sophie Lyn! Sophie just graduated from Northland Prep and is also the Arizona State XC Champion! Sophie started mountain biking in our Gear Girls program and credits her time with Gear Girls for sparking her passion in mountain biking and helping her develop the confidence and skills to achieve her goals. Sophie Lyn started riding in 8th grade and continued to help mentor the next generation of female mountain bikers throughout her high school years.

She loved Gear Girls because it’s important to have strong female connections from an early age in a male-dominated sport. Sophie says that Gear Girls gave her the “Confidence and strength to go through life — not just mountain biking but also hiking, trail work, cross country skiing, just being outside, and knowing how to do more outdoor activities on my own was a big confidence booster. Because it is all-girls, it definitely catered to what possibilities might come up as a female in outdoor situations, and offered a comfortable place to ask questions and get real answers and helpful advice.” Sophie met some of her best friends through mountain biking and chose her future university because it offers more mountain biking competition opportunities.

When asked what advice she would offer to young girls just starting out, Sophie said, “Commit to just one practice even if you’re scared. It just took one for me to be hooked. During hard rides when you want to quit, just say to yourself ‘Eventually I’ll go downhill!’ That’s the most common thought I have during hard rides and races.”

Congratulations Sophie Lyn! Thank you for inspiring the next generation of female mountain bikers!

Gear Girls is a free program for girls in grades 4-8, and is generously supported by Unisource Energy Services, Catena Foundation, and individual donors who believe in our mission. Please make a donation today at aztrail.org so wecan continue to provide meaningful outdoor opportunities to young people and inspire the next generation of trail stewards.
