Between 2017 and 2023, the #ArizonaTrail Associati Between 2017 and 2023, the #ArizonaTrail Association partnered with @arizonastateuniversity to study wildlife and recreational patterns on the Arizona National Scenic Trail. This was accomplished through the placement and monitoring of 59 camera traps throughout the state. The results of this multi-year statewide study are now available through the report: Wildlife and Recreation on the #ArizonaNationalScenicTrail, completed by Ali Lotfi, Faranak Parkami, Kinley Ragan, Matthew Nelson and Jan Schipper. Report 🔗 in bio

This study is the first of its kind, and comprises one of the longest transects ever analyzed for wildlife occurrences across a variety of biomes. In total, more than 5,400 images of 25 different mammals were captured, and more than 40,000 images of hikers, mountain bikers and equestrians. The report details:

methodology
camera locations
species diversity and richness
activity pattern of species
recreational uses
pet activity along the trail
occurrence of cattle
future management recommendations
and much more!

We encourage to check out the final report and share with others who may be interested. You’ll enjoy some of the photos of animals documented along the #AZT, as well as 21 Figures and 5 Tables of data.
How are you going to celebrate National Trails Day How are you going to celebrate National Trails Day? There are recreational and stewardship events happening around the country that will bring people together to celebrate our National Trails – including National Scenic Trails, National Historic Trails and National Recreation Trails. These are our most treasured trails that are so important they’ve received Congressional designation (or in the case of National Recreation Trails, Secretarial designation).

To celebrate National Trails Day, the Arizona Trail Association is hosting five events statewide. One is already full, but we’d love to see you at one of these four gatherings:

Santa Rita Foothills Mountain Bike Ride
Coronado National Forest near Sonoita
7:30 am – 2 pm
Join us on Passage 5 for a group mountain bike ride on the newly-completed Santa Rita Foothills Singletrack! For more information and to register for the event, visit our volunteer 🔗 in bio

Santa Rita Foothills Hike
Coronado National Forest near Sonoita
7:30 am – 2 pm
Come experience some freshly built trail in the foothills of the Santa Rita Mountains alongside trailbuilders who have been hard at work since October 2025 to complete the greatest new section of the AZT! For more information and to register for the event, visit our volunteer 🔗 in bio

Highline Hike or Mountain Bike Ride
Tonto National Forest near Pine
10 am – 1 pm
Hike or ride along the Arizona National Scenic Trail and the Highline National Recreation Trail. You’ll get to enjoy some beautiful views, healthy forest, and check out some recent improvements to the trail in this area. Afterwards, we will meet at THAT Brewery, an Arizona Trail Business Partner, to enjoy lunch and some Arizona Trail Ale.

Trail Maintenance on the Kaibab Plateau
Kaibab National Forest near Jacob Lake
8 am – 3 pm
Escape the heat of the desert and head north to the high-elevation forests of the Kaibab Plateau! Join our crew on the North Rim for a rewarding day of trail maintenance near Orderville Trailhead, just off Hwy 89A.

Can’t join us for any of these? Please consider making a donation to support the AZT’s protection and maintenance, and we’ll mail you an I LOVE THE AZT sticker!
URGENT ACTION ALERT: America’s public lands are on URGENT ACTION ALERT: America’s public lands are on the line — and we need you to make a call to your Senator today.

Today, the Senate will hold a vote-a-rama as part of the budget reconciliation process. Colorado’s Senator Bennett is filing a critical amendment — the Public Lands Integrity Act — that would protect our public lands from being quietly sold off through a budget loophole.

Last year, the Senate came within a few votes of using the reconciliation process to sell off three million acres of federal public lands — lands that belong to all of us. Under current rules, that can happen again with only 51 votes. The Public Lands Integrity Act would change that, requiring a 60-vote threshold for any future attempt to sell or dispose of public lands through reconciliation.

Public lands are where we hike, bike, ride, camp, hunt, fish, work, pray, play, and seek renewal. They anchor local economies and are vital to our way of life. They are not a budget line item. The Public Lands Integrity Act is the first significant legislative safeguard against sell-offs now and into the future. There’s no excuse to sit this one out.

Please call your Senator NOW: 202-224-3121

Tell them: “I’m calling to urge the Senator to vote YES on the Public Lands Integrity Act amendment during vote-a-rama, should the amendment receive a vote.”
