Trail Skills Institute – Mormon Lake
September 10, 2017
Participants met under the scenic pines of the Mormon Lake passage for classroom and hands-on learning time for Modules 1&2 of the ATA Trail Skills Institute. 10 volunteers were joined by instructors Mark Loseth and Matt Roberts of ACE in learning the basics of trail corridor maintenance and drainage. The class covered terminology, slope recommendations and vegetation management techniques, along with some tips for solving common problems found on the trail. After lunch, the team grabbed tools and divided into groups to evaluate the trail and propose solutions to some tread problems. Before real work could begin, however, a thunderstorm rolled in and nearby lightning strikes sent the group back to base camp. It was a great lesson on the importance of group safety on maintenance events!
