Now Recruiting: VETS Program Volunteer Field Leaders (Non-Coms)

Arizona National Scenic Trail | Statewide | Veterans Only

The Arizona Trail Association’s Veteran Engagement & Trail Stewardship (VETS) Program is expanding — and we’re looking for veterans ready to step into leadership, service, and community once again.

This is not just volunteering.

This is a peer-led leadership role for veterans who want to guide others, protect public lands, and build something bigger than themselves—one mission at a time—on the Arizona National Scenic Trail.

The Mission

Volunteer Field Leaders (Non-Coms) help lead veteran trail projects, hikes, outreach, and stewardship missions that foster purpose after service, camaraderie, leadership development, and healing through meaningful outdoor work.

What You’ll Do

• Co-lead three VETS events per year (seasonal commitment; summers off)

• Support trail operations and veteran-specific programming

• Help manage group safety, logistics, and morale

• Serve as a peer mentor in outdoor settings

• Represent the VETS Program with professionalism and heart

What You’ll Get

• Trail Skills Institute (TSI) training — “Trail Building 101”

• Wilderness First Aid (WFA) certification

• Trauma-informed leadership & peer support training

• Mentorship from experienced VETS leaders

• Travel support, meals, and loaner or donated gear

• VETS Field Leader Swag Kit (hat, shirt, patch, trail journal, first aid kit)

Who This Is For

This role is ideal for veterans seeking renewed purpose, leadership development, and community — without pressure or burnout. No prior trail experience required; just a willingness to learn, lead, and look out for our fellow brothers and sisters.

Why “Non-Com”?

Just as in the military, senior enlisted non-commissioned officers (Non-Coms) are the backbone — leaders who keep people moving forward and ensure no one gets left behind.
