In Memoriam: Mason Lussow

Mason Lussow, a Marine Corps veteran, left our community unexpectedly on August 26, 2024 but his legacy of quiet strength and unwavering dedication to service will always be remembered. He was the beloved son of his mother, Ari Olsen, and father, Alex Lussow, an avid outdoorsman who instilled in Mason a deep love for nature and adventure from a very young age. Alongside his siblings, Monty and Rourke, Mason’s childhood was filled with explorations of the great outdoors, a passion that continued to shape him throughout his life.

Mason’s commitment to service extended far beyond his military career. His post-Corps journey was a testament to his dedication to self-improvement. He embraced the role of a lineman apprentice, a position that took him across the country, connecting communities one town at a time. This transition, a true reflection of his dedication, eventually led him to pursue a career as a firefighter with the Tucson Fire Department—a dream that, tragically, remained unfulfilled but symbolized his unwavering commitment to service.

Mason’s contribution to the trail community was deeply valued. Although he attended only one AZT VETS event over Father’s Day weekend, his quiet strength and strong work ethic made him invaluable to our veteran crew. His impact, though brief, was profound, leaving an indelible mark on the trail community that everyone who worked alongside him will remember. As such, we induct Mason as an honorary Fox Squad member of the Arizona Trail Association’s VETS Program.

Mason’s passing has left a deep void in our hearts. Those who knew and loved him share in his family’s profound grief. Our collective thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time. As we mourn his loss, we find solace in honoring his sacrifice by continuing the fight to help veterans in need—a cause that connects all members of the military community and to which we at the ATA dedicate ourselves daily. We are committed to ensuring that Mason’s memory endures through our ongoing support for holistic and therapeutic opportunities for military veterans and their families on the Arizona National Scenic Trail.

Rest easy, brother. Your legacy will live on in the hearts of those you touched.
