One trail has many stories. We’re paying tribute to trails by telling the stories of people connected to three: Appalachian, Arizona, and Bay Area Ridge.

Posted @withregram • @aztgeargirls Living in the Posted @withregram • @aztgeargirls Living in the Southwest, summers are usually loosely dictated by fire season. In Flagstaff, the snowpack is praised and fingers are crossed for light winds as spring transitions out. This weekend, Gear Girls added to their outdoor toolboxes by diving into the fire triangle and all things wildfire! ❤️‍🔥
Girls were able to create their own (mini) campfires with flint and steel while soaking in some epic views of the snow-laden San Francisco Peaks 🏕🍫
Thank you @flagstafftreecare for the firewood splittin' 🪓

We are delighted to share the news that the #arizo We are delighted to share the news that the #arizonatrail Sunflower North Project is now finished and ready for your boots, wheels and hooves. This reroute project on the #TontoNationalForest is the most recent in our commitment to remove the Arizona Trail from dirt roads so hikers, runners, mountain bikers and horseback riders have a genuine trail experience, and to better align with the AZT’s Congressional designation as a non-motorized National Scenic Trail. Instead of walking along dirt roads on Passage 22 (Saddle Mountain) you can now savor three miles of fresh singletrack!

The vision of a collaborative effort among staff, volunteers and stewards, a sustainable route was designed to maximize scenic and recreational values and avoid roads and fences whenever possible. A grant from the Heritage Fund made this trail construction effort possible, along with regular volunteer opportunities to clear the corridor and finish the tread. Big thanks to @cuddymountaintrailcompany for their hard work and attention to detail throughout the process using light machinery that’s perfectly suited for trail construction in this rocky environment.

You’ll find the beautiful, flowing trail north of Highway 87 and west of Sycamore Creek. Most people know this area as “Sunflower” and the traditional Apache name translates to “place where the turkeys roost.” The best access is from the Bushnell Tanks Trailhead, located just off Hwy 87, or Cross F Trailhead.

"...Let this great wonder of nature remain as it n "...Let this great wonder of nature remain as it now is. Do nothing to mar its grandeur, sublimity, and loveliness. You cannot improve on it. But what you can do is to keep it for your children, your children's children, and all who come after you, as the one great sight which every American should see." ~President Theodore Roosevelt

On this day (January 11) in 1908, President Theodore Roosevelt dedicated the Grand Canyon as a national monument under public protection. Although he was originally from New York City, Roosevelt had spent a large amount of time in the West, specifically in the Dakota Territory where he lived and ranched. This time in the West gave Roosevelt a deep respect for nature and the environment.
It pained the future President to see natural and historic sites paved over or destroyed to make way for other things. When he became President, Roosevelt made it one of his personal missions to do whatever he could to preserve the beautiful natural sites of the United States.

The Grand Canyon region has been home to Native people since time began.
Ancestral lands of the Hualapai, Havasupai, Southern Paiute, Hopi, Zuni, Navajo, Apache, and Yavapai.
