🎙️"Keep Parks Public: Arizona's Public Lands and t 🎙️"Keep Parks Public: Arizona's Public Lands and the Border Wall" 🎭 The Scoundrel and Scamp Theatre ~ Tucson, AZ 👉 Friday, August 28 • 5:30 PM - 8 PM Join us for a live podcast recording about the threats facing Arizona's public lands. This event is part of the @western.priorities Keep Parks Public campaign. We'll be discussing the impacts of border wall construction on wildlife corridors and Indigenous sites, along with staffing and funding cuts at land management agencies and rollbacks of environmental protections, from #OrganPipeCactusNationalMonument and #CabezaPrietaNationalWildlifeRefuge to #QuitobaquitoSprings. We've brought together an expert panel to discuss these issues, including Matthew Nelson with the Arizona Trail Association, Russ McSpadden with the @centerforbiodiv , and more to be announced soon! Aaron Weiss, Executive Director for the Center for Western Priorities and host of The Landscape podcast, will moderate the discussion. After the panel, you'll have the chance to visit with representatives from these groups to learn more about fighting back against attacks on our public lands. Proceeds from the evening benefitted the Arizona Trail Association, and we are so grateful for the support! Our Volunteer Program doesn't slow down, even when Our Volunteer Program doesn't slow down, even when temperatures rise, rain falls, and challenging conditions might frighten away others. We are especially grateful for the nine hearty individuals who joined a trail work party last weekend on the Coronado National Forest (Santa Catalina Ranger District). We worked together to improve 0.4-mile of the Green Mountain Trail on Mt. Lemmon -- part of the Pusch Ridge Wilderness Bypass. While this is not part of the official Arizona National Scenic Trail, it's the preferred route for mountain bikers and equestrians due to the fact that the #AZT through the Pusch Ridge Wilderness is off limits to bikes, and the steep granite slabs are dangerous for equines and equestrians. One of the benefits of the Green Mountain Trail is that it's high on the north-facing slope of the mountain, offering shade and cooler temperatures while the desert feels like an oven just a short distance downhill. Along with partner organizations like Tucson Off Road Cyclists and Activists @torcamtb and Tucson Saddle Club, the Arizona Trail Association is proud to maintain trails on public lands for all non-motorized uses. We are confident you'll find that maintaining trails is just as rewarding as hiking, running, biking and riding them.
Laddie Cox, an Arizona Trail legend and American h Laddie Cox, an Arizona Trail legend and American hero, passed away on May 31, 2026 at age 91. Laddie got involved in Arizona Trail work events in 2003 and over the next 20 years he built and maintained trail with care, led the first concerted effort to build gates at fence crossings statewide, and was a vital part of the Arizona Trail Association’s volunteer trail corps. He completed section hiking the 800-mile Arizona National Scenic Tail at age 70. Laddie was raised in a ranching family in remote eastern Arizona. He earned degrees in Animal Husbandry and later in life achieved a degree in Natural Resources. While many knew Laddie was a 30-year retired Army Colonel, few knew that he served two tours in Vietnam and earned a Silver Star, Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. Laddie was married in 1959 to the love of his life, Sue Ward. They raised two daughters, Dr. Virginia Crane and Dr. Sharon Mullis, and produced four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Everyone who spent time with Laddie Cox on and off the trail agree that he was a man of the highest character with a strong work ethic and generous nature. He will not be forgotten. A memorial service being held this Thursday, July 16th at 10 am at Casas Adobes Congregationalist Church in Tucson. All are invited to attend and celebrate the life of this incredible man.
