In Memoriam: David Burkett

As a lifelong hiker, starting as a Boy Scout, David Burkett was thrilled at the launching of the Arizona Trail. He volunteered, helped build, and hiked the Trail. He proudly displays his AZT volunteer of the year award plaque.

David had a long, active and happy life. He was born in Dimmitt, TX in 1936. He attended West Texas College and TWC. (UTEP). It was at the latter where he met Jeri in a Physics class. Little did either know that they would spend the next 68 years together. After the wedding, David reported to Pensacola, FL for Naval Officers training. Careers in purchasing, insurance and real estate followed. Throughout, his loves remained the same: family, hiking, and biking. He and Jeri hiked Europe, UK, North and Middle America, and Africa. Biking the RAGBRAI in Iowa was a highlight for him.

The years also produced three wonderful and intelligent children: Connie (now deceased), Kati Beaubien (Brad), and David V. A bonus was a grandson: Kyle Van.

David will be missed by many, but none more than Jeri and the “offspring.”
