The initiative connects commemoration with action, offering Arizonans a meaningful way to honor service, support veteran wellness, and celebrate the nation’s Semiquincentennial through shared outdoor experiences.
“Operation Freedom March is deeply personal to me,” said Arizona Secretary of State Adrian Fontes, Chair of the Arizona America250 Commission and Marine Corps veteran. “The values I learned in the Marines — resilience, commitment, and connection to something greater than ourselves — are the same values this initiative represents. By coming together on the Arizona Trail, we honor the service of our veterans and military families while experiencing the strength and beauty of our state. It’s a powerful way to reflect on our shared sacrifice and celebrate the enduring spirit of our nation.”
Through its partnership with the Arizona Trail Association, the Commission is expanding opportunities for Americans of all ages and backgrounds to participate in America250 programming while promoting physical activity, community connection, and stewardship of public lands.
Participants are encouraged to:
Complete Arizona Trail segments individually or with organized groups
Share stories of service, reflection, and community throughout the year
Join trail events and veteran-focused outings statewide
Log miles and celebrate milestones leading up to July 4, 2026
“Celebrating 250 years of freedom means recognizing the men and women who have defended it,” said Michael “Chappy” Chappell, Director of the Arizona Trail Association’s VETS Program. “Our veterans and active-duty service members have carried the weight of protecting the liberties we enjoy every day. Operation Freedom March offers a simple but powerful way for anyone to take part — whether as an individual, with family, with coworkers, or with a community group. It’s about movement, connection, service, and honoring the values that shaped this nation.”
Operation Freedom March complements other Arizona America250 initiatives, including Road to 250: Arizona Traveling Museum, Trails250, Fitness250, and Outdoors250 — all designed to inspire civic pride, participation, and reflection statewide.
Arizona America250 programs are made possible with generous support from Banner Health, APS, SRP, BlueCross BlueShield of Arizona, Freeport-McMoRan, Sundt, Desert Financial Credit Union, Mayo Clinic, The Burton Family Foundation, Greater Phoenix Leadership, Avnet, Player 15 Group, the National Endowment for the Humanities, Walmart, City of Phoenix, Hensley Beverage Company, HonorHealth, Best Western Hotels & Resorts, Vitalyst Health Foundation, Resolution Copper, Garrison Forty Eight, Flinn Foundation, and Aspire Counseling Services.
