Drastic Cuts Proposed to National Trails Funding for 2026

We are very concerned about the President’s proposed budget cuts to National Trails for federal fiscal year 2026. What’s at risk?
- The National Park Service will face a $900 million funding cut to National Park Service Operations
- BLM funding for National Trails reduced from $11 million to $0 – overall 74% cut to National Monuments, National Conservation Areas, Wilderness and Wilderness Study Areas, Wild and Scenic Rivers, and National Scenic and Historic Trails
- The Forest Service will face trail funding cuts of 60% for maintenance
- Drastically reducing critical Land and Water Conservation Funds promised to the American people that are essential for protecting and completing the national trails system
These cuts will lead to:
- Increased staffing cuts at our already under-staffed land management agencies
- Limited agency resources and increased roadblocks for nonprofit partners to effectively build, maintain, and interpret the trails
- Delays for critical maintenance projects that will increase the deferred maintenance backlog
- Negatively impacting the American public’s visitor experience and recreational enjoyment of trails
What can you do?
- Spread the word! Tell your friends and family how the proposed budget will impact the National Trails System and public lands. Share on social media, have these conversations!
- Your voice has power. Contact your representatives and advocate for the continued funding and protection of the National Trails System.
