Join us in welcoming another new face at the Arizo Join us in welcoming another new face at the Arizona Trail Association; Alex Gonzales ~Trail Technician Alex was born and raised in south Texas near the Gulf Coast and spent his childhood climbing trees and camping with his family. His joy of experiencing the outdoors and love of the natural world eventually led to a B.S. in Natural Resources Management from Texas Tech University with a minor in GIS. After graduation in 2020, Alex has spent time working for various government agencies and conservation organizations all over the western US. These experiences gave Alex a diverse background including trail construction and maintenance, wildlife biological work, and habitat restoration. Eventually landing in the Santa Rita Mountains leading a trail crew on a restoration project, he found the Sonoran Desert and the ecosystems too beautiful to leave and has been based in Tucson since 2022. Working and traveling in the Southwest has expanded his appreciation for recreation and conservation and he hopes to continue to make a positive impact. During his free time Alex loves rock climbing, hiking, photography, and generally being active in the outdoors. What did you want to be when you were younger? Alex: I always loved exploring the outdoors and examining the natural world around me. I did not have a distinct goal for what I wanted to be (it always seemed to change) but I knew I wanted to work outside and help how I could. After watching many nature shows as a kid and reading about all the different animals and ecosystems, I wanted to learn more and be a part of the realm that works in these unique places. I never thought that would bring me to trail work, as I did not know that was a job that existed. Working to both improve trails and the public’s interactions with the outdoors is right up the alley that I thought about when I was younger.
Happy trails to all the runners participating in t Happy trails to all the runners participating in the AZT Oracle Rumble presented by Summit Hut today! 50 Mile and 50K runners left the Freeman Road Trailhead at 7:30 am this morning and will experience Passage 14 (Black Hills) on their way to Oracle State Park. Half-Marathon and 12K runners will enjoy the trails within the park. This annual event benefits the Arizona Trail Association, and is one of five events we organize on the AZT each year. We are deeply grateful to the elected officials and staffers that stopped by to learn more about the Arizona Trail, share their support for protecting public land in Arizona, and enjoying some tasty wild game dishes. We all know the vital role that our public lands play in our state heritage and economy, but also for every person who gets out to enjoy our outdoor spaces. Let's keep the momentum going- join us in advocating for our public lands and the Arizona Trail! Tickets are on sale now for the Arizona Trail Asso Tickets are on sale now for the Arizona Trail Association’s 31st Annual Meeting! Join us on Sunday, February 9 from 9:30 am – 1 pm at the Desert Botanical Garden in Phoenix for the largest gathering of Arizona Trail friends of the entire year. Tickets are $40 each and include a catered lunch (deets below), and admission to @dbgphx. The event is limited to the first 200 people to register, so get ’em before they’re gone. This is going to be a truly amazing gathering and you won’t want to miss it. In addition to celebrating accomplishments over the past year, the annual meeting will include featured speakers Tom Zoellner, award-winning writer and author of the book Rim to River – Looking Into the Heart of Arizona and Nick Fowler, Fastest Known Time Record Holder on the AZT (12 days, 17 hours, 33 minutes). You’ll also get a preview of the upcoming documentary about Troy & Gil Gillenwater’s trek across Arizona in 1982, which helped boost interest in development of an Arizona Trail in the early days.
