A 67-year-old hiker from Alvarado, Texas, tragically passed away after hiking at Grand Canyon National Park.
Officials said the incident happened on July 8, 2025, on the South Kaibab Trail. The hiker was returning from Skeleton Point and was attempting to reach Phantom Ranch for an overnight stay, according to officials.
The hiker was found unresponsive and bystanders began CPR as National Park Service medical personnel and volunteers responded to the scene. Despite efforts, the hiker could not be revived.
Officials said the park’s extreme summer temperatures, often exceeding 120 degrees in shaded areas, pose significant risks.
Park rangers warn against hiking during peak heat hours from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and advise checking the park’s Key Hiking Messages for trail and weather updates.
Officials said an investigation by the National Park Service and the Coconino County Medical Examiner is underway.
