Detour Along Forest Roads 32 and 64 to Avoid West Fire Closure on Highline Passage

The Tonto National Forest has reopened Forest Roads 32 and 64 (Control Road) between Washington Park Trailhead and Highway 87. This is the best option for Arizona Trail thru-hikers and riders since the entire Highline Passage between Washington Park and Pine Trailhead remains closed. These Forest Roads parallel the Arizona Trail to the south.

The West Fire is still actively burning, and the Tonto National Forest and Arizona Trail Association are working to conduct conditions assessments so the trail can be opened as soon as it’s safe. Please help spread the word about this temporary detour…

When traveling southbound: From Washington Park Trailhead, follow FR 32 south for 4 miles. Then, travel west on FR 64 for approximately 14 miles. Once you reach Hwy 87, walk or ride as far off the highway as possible for 2 miles and look for AZT markers on both sides of the highway, where the trail crosses. Beware of high-speed traffic!
