When the six of us stood together at Flagstaff Hotshots Ranch last Sept. 27, mud from the previous night’s downpour underneath us, gray skies portending the weekend forecast above us, we said our good-byes. “Next year, we’re doing this thing.” Looks of doubt. “Seriously, we’re doing it.”
