AZT in a DAY
AZT in a DAY
October 4, 2025
Arizona Trail in a Day is back for 2025
, and this year, it’s getting a refresh — one that puts joy, connection, and safety at the center of it all.
Instead of racing to complete miles, we’re inviting you to spend a day out on the trail simply enjoying it. No competition, no pressure, and no expectations. Whether you hike, bike, run, or ride a short section or a long stretch, the goal is the same: experience the Arizona Trail in whatever way feels best to you. We believe that by spending the day together as a community on the same trail that we’ll accomplish something truly spectacular.
The shift from trying to cover all 800 miles in a single day comes in response to what we’ve heard from the AZT community and the Trail itself, especially since October has become hotter with each passing year. Arizona Trail in a Day 2025 is about reconnecting with the essence of why we love the AZT – the love we have for the Trail, for those who care for it, and for the memories we make on it.
Fundraising is simpler than ever this year. If you feel inspired to give back to the trail, you can make a donation directly through our website. No peer-to-peer campaigns, no creating new profiles. Just you, the Trail, and the impact you want to make. We encourage you to share your own personal story about why you’re participating, what you love about the AZT, and any experiences you have during Arizona Trail in a Day through your social media platform of choice. Hopefully your photographs and stories will inspire others to get involved and give back. Consider using these hashtags: #aztinaday #arizonatrail #loveazt
Let’s make this year’s Arizona Trail in a Day a celebration of presence over pace. A celebration of community over completion. And a celebration of the 800 miles of scenic wonder that connect us all.
Save the date. Invite your friends. Go outside. Have an incredible experience.
We hope to see you on the Arizona Trail on Saturday, October 4, 2025.

Presentation: AZT VETS & "Operation Freedom March" @ REI Tucson
Presentation: AZT VETS & "Operation Freedom March" @ REI Tucson
October 25, 2025 3:00 pm - 4:30 pm
REI, 160 W Wetmore Rd, Tucson, AZ 85705, USA
Arizona Trail VETS Program: Veterans, Engagement & Trail Stewardship
Come learn how military veterans are building community, restoring wild landscapes, and finding healing on Arizona’s 800-mile National Scenic Trail. This presentation introduces the Arizona Trail Association’s Veteran Engagement & Trail Stewardship (VETS) Program — a nationally recognized initiative that empowers veterans through service-based trail work, outdoor adventure, and purpose-driven connection to public lands. Whether you’re a veteran, military family member, or simply a supporter of those who served, this is your chance to explore how trails can transform lives.
Operation Freedom March: Honoring Veterans & Defending Public Lands
Join us for an inspiring presentation with Michael “Chappy” Chappell, U.S. Navy veteran and Director of the Arizona Trail VETS Program, as he shares the story behind Operation Freedom March — a statewide campaign uniting veterans, military families, and patriotic supporters in celebration of America’s 250th birthday through community service, storytelling, and trail stewardship.
This campaign challenges Arizonans to walk, hike, or run all 800 miles of the AZT by July 4, 2026, while raising awareness about veterans’ mental health, environmental conservation, and the healing power of nature. Learn how you can get involved, support the cause, and help us make history on the Arizona National Scenic Trail.
Date: Saturday, October 25 Location: REI Tucson – Community Room Who Should Attend: Veterans, service members, military families, outdoor lovers, and anyone inspired to give back
Presenter Bio
Michael “Chappy” Chappell is the Director of the Arizona Trail Association’s VETS Program, a U.S. Navy veteran, and a passionate advocate for nature-based healing and public lands stewardship. After deployments during Operation Iraqi Freedom, Chappy found solace on the trail and trained through the National Outdoor Leadership School (NOLS). Since then, he has dedicated his life to building community and purpose for fellow veterans through outdoor service. Under his leadership, the VETS Program has expanded trail access, launched large-scale mental health campaigns, and become a national model for veteran-led conservation. Chappy lives in Tucson with his family and leads trail crews across Arizona’s most remote landscapes.
